We face an urgent need to address climate change and deliver on the promises of the Paris Agreement, yet the role of IT in this global challenge is often overlooked. At the recent Impact X Summit in Sydney; Mark Jobbins, Chief Technology Officer for Pure Storage in Asia Pacific and Japan, made clear that the IT industry is a significant player in this race. With data centers consuming vast amounts of energy and contributing to rising emissions the need for efficiency and innovation in IT infrastructure has never been more paramount
“It is critically important for organizations to deeply focus on their IT services and optimize the utilization of those resources,” said Jobbins. This call highlights the urgency of addressing IT’s impact on the environment. As he explained, “it is estimated that about 2% of all power generation worldwide is used to run data centers and data transmission networks” – a number that will only grow as demand for data storage and processing surges.
