Can Businesses Really Save the Planet Inside the WBCSD Strategy for Global Change

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is driven by a bold mission: to ensure that all people can thrive in harmony with our planet by 2050. This serves as the foundation for their efforts to mobilize and guide businesses toward sustainable transformation. During the recent Climate and Nature 2030 conference in Sydney, Andrew Petersen, CEO of the Business Council for Sustainable Development Australia, engaged in a conversation with Peter Bakker, President and CEO of the WBCSD. Together, they explored the organization’s mission and delved into the significant challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for businesses worldwide.

At the heart of WBCSD’s work is a shared vision: “a world where 9+ billion people can live well within the planet’s boundaries.” As Bakker explains, “We basically exist to work with companies and for companies to accelerate the system transformations that are needed.” This ambitious goal is not just about decarbonization; it encompasses becoming nature-positive, fostering equity, and fundamentally reshaping value chains across industries.
